The Baylor Years of Alexis Morris

Alexis Morris came to Baylor University with a lot of prestige as a recruit, because she was trained by Kim Mulkey who saw her as an important player. Morris began her career at Baylor with immediate effects, becoming the team’s fifth highest scorer and helping them reach Sweet 16 in her first year as a freshman.

Things changed in a very unexpected way for this promising basketball player when she got kicked out from the program because of breaking team rules and having an arrest off-court too.

This time of difficulty in her life turned out to be a turning point. It was the start of an amazing story about how she found redemption and achieved success at LSU, where later on under Mulkey’s coaching they won the national championship once more.

Rutgers and the Arrest

When Baylor University let her go, Alexis Morris moved to Rutgers University. In this time, Alexis Morris had to not play for one season because of the NCAA transfer rules. During this phase of her journey, there were serious personal difficulties that came up including getting arrested twice once for assault and another time for having marijuana on her.

Texas A&M and Doubts

Following the chaos Alexis Morris faced at Baylor and Rutgers, Alexis Morris entered Texas A&M for the 2020-21 season. Alexis Morris was given approval to play immediately by the NCAA. But because of all past difficulties, she started considering completely quitting basketball.

Regardless of her average performance with 6.0 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists for Aggies every game played during that time period; Morris had a hard time dealing with mental and emotional stress caused by previous setbacks.

Reuniting with Mulkey at LSU

Alexis Morris transferred to LSU and encountered coach Mulkey. This proved to be rather important for her as it allowed her to play for a coach who was aware of the hardships she underwent and who still had faith in her.

Especially in the season of 2021-22, Morris had made his major impact for Tiger as he became one of the key players.

Alexis Morris also helped in leading the team into the NCAA Tournament in which the team claimed their first national championship. Against Iowa in the title game Morris stand 21 points and nine assists. This made her rather an important component in the preparation as well as in the victory of LSU during that time.

The Championship Season

2022 saw the entry of Angel Reese, Flau’jae Johnson and Kateri Poole into LSU, which was a turning point for the program. Reese, who transferred from Maryland, instantly became a powerful presence with double-double averages while also leading in scoring and rebounds.

Johnson, a much-acclaimed new student, showed her versatility and scoring skills right away. Poole also transferred to our team and she brought important experience plus guidance into the squad.

The 2023 title was LSU head coach Kim Mulkey's fourth — she previously won three national championships with Baylor before finding a title team in Louisiana.

But, it was the consistent and crucial performance of Alexis Morris that kept the team intact. Morris, who joined again with coach Kim Mulkey, had a successful season by achieving an average of 14.9 points for each game and making important free throws during close matches.

The National Championship Game

In the exciting NCAA Championship game against Iowa, Alexis Morris showed her skills by making 21 points and giving nine assists. This helped LSU win the game. She scored 19 of these points in the second half which shows how she can perform well under pressure.

Also, Morris played an important role in defense as she managed to stop Iowa’s best player, Caitlin Clark from scoring many times during the second half helping LSU get their first national title. Her total involvement was crucial in the Tigers’ 102-85 victory, establishing her as a significant player in this notable win.

The Comeback Kid

In her story, Alexis Morris has shown a strong character of not giving in and bouncing back. She met difficulties like being dismissed, getting arrested and having doubts about playing basketball again but did not let these stop her from chasing after what she wanted.

The way Morris handled tough times is motivating to many people because it shows that even when things are hard, you can still keep going towards your dream. Her story is proof of how determination can overcome all difficulties. It shows that with belief in yourself and putting effort, nothing is impossible.

The WNBA Draft

Another example is Alexis Morris, who got picked 22nd overall by the Connecticut Sun in the 2023 WNBA Draft (a few days after her team LSU won the national championship). But, she couldn’t make it very far in her WNBA career because she was let go from the Sun during training camp next month.

This shows how hard it can be for young players to get a place on teams’ rosters in the WNBA which only has a certain number of teams and roster spots too. However, Morris didn’t lose hope and kept her dream of playing basketball alive.

The Nickname “The Show”

At 12 years old, Alexis Morris was given the nickname “The Show” by her AAU coach. This name showed off her lively playing style and charm on the court. As she continued with basketball, this title became a big part of who she was.

She joined Harlem Globetrotters and truly lived up to her nickname in every sense of it displaying skills uniquely while entertaining fans enthusiastically with a sense of showmanship that made people love watching her play basketball.

Her skill to mix sportiness with entertaining style did not just pay homage to her nickname, yet also emphasized the development she had made as a player.

The path of Alexis Morris serves as a strong illustration about how tough resolve and persistence are needed for conquering difficulties in life.
